Foxx Report

On January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump and Michael R. Pence were sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States of America at the 58th Presidential Inauguration. It was a very exciting and positive day for the people of the United States. We pride ourselves on the peaceful transfer of power, and I believe this tradition is a strong statement to people all over the world who value freedom. We are a privileged nation and we must never be casual with the freedoms we have inherited.

President Trump and Vice President Pence have been granted a sacred, public trust. They care deeply about this country, and I am confident they will work hard to uphold the resilient tradition of liberty and limited government inscribed in our Constitution. They will meet the trials ahead with strength and resolve, and I will do everything I can to help them.

Standing Up for Life

This week the House passed H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. It makes the Hyde amendment, which has been regularly attached to annual appropriations bills for nearly 40 years to prevent federal funding of abortion with limited exceptions, and other current abortion funding prohibitions permanent and government-wide. This common-sense measure protects the unborn and prevents taxpayers from being forced to finance thousands of elective abortions. It reflects the will of the American people and is the product of what has historically been a bipartisan, bicameral consensus in Congress.

I was also pleased by the Trump administration’s decision to reinstate the Mexico City Policy via executive order. Originally introduced by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, the policy requires nongovernmental organizations to agree as a condition of receiving any federal funding that they “would neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.” The American people do not want the government to spend their hard-earned tax dollars counseling women in foreign countries to have abortions. President Trump has sent a powerful message about his dedication to protecting the unborn.

Today thousands gathered in Washington at the March for Life to acknowledge the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the millions of babies who have been robbed of the most fundamental of all rights. It remains my solemn duty to speak for those who cannot, because our freedom rests on the cornerstone right we all have to life. Rest assured I will continue to promote policies in Washington that allow families to flourish and that protect life at all stages.

National School Choice Week

On Tuesday I joined students, teachers and parents at a Capitol Hill rally celebrating National School Choice Week. Innovative charter schools, magnet schools, homeschooling and scholarship programs have provided new hope and opportunity to thousands of families. School choice is a powerful tool to help children succeed in school and in life.

The challenge we face is extending the promise of school choice to more students and families. As chairwoman of the House education committee, that is a challenge I take seriously and one I am committed to tackling head-on. Fortunately, with a new Congress and a new Republican administration, there is more interest in delivering real school-choice solutions than ever before. I am encouraged by the momentum that is already building and look forward to the work ahead.

115th Congress Committee Assignments

In addition to chairing the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, I have been selected to serve on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. It’s an honor to return to this committee, which works to exercise effective oversight over the federal government and proactively investigate and expose waste, fraud and abuse.

It has legislative jurisdiction over the District of Columbia, the government procurement process, federal personnel systems, the Postal Service and other matters. Its primary responsibility is oversight of virtually everything government does – from national security to homeland security grants, from federal workforce policies to regulatory reform and reorganization authority, from information technology procurements at individual agencies to government-wide data security standards.

Opposing Physician-Assisted Suicide

This week I co-sponsored a resolution of disapproval to overturn “The Death with Dignity Act of 2015” (Act 21-577), which legalizes physician-assisted suicide in the District of Columbia. While I would never wish to see someone suffer, I believe physician-assisted suicide has no place in our society. Life is a gift from God and should be cherished. There are also significant concerns that the definition of “terminal disease” in the legislation is too vague. Many conditions are terminal if left untreated, and I fear individuals who are under mental duress or other curable diseases may be pressured to end their life to save money or escape depression.

What’s Coming Up

Next week the House will continue its work providing relief from overregulation by considering a series of resolutions in response to the plethora of rules put in force by the Obama administration during its final year in office. If enacted, these resolutions will overturn the regulations that have paralyzed our economy and brought great uncertainty to workers and businesses.

Sincerely,
